I am drawn to tutoring English primarily because of my passion for literacy. I believe that literacy is one of the most crucial skills a person can possess. Literacy is a basic skill, but it affects almost every aspect of life. I find it rewarding to help others develop the skills they need to communicate more effectively and see their success both in school and in the broader world. I enjoy working with others and sharing with them my love of English. My prior tutoring experience consists primarily of working with elementary school aged children on developing their reading and handwriting abilities. I have also volunteered to help adult ESL students improve their English. I have additionally helped many classmates at the high school and collegiate level write and edit papers and prepare for English exams. I am interested in tutoring any aspect of English for any age or grade level. I have an extensive academic background in English. My lifelong love of the written word led me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English. During my academic career, I received expert instruction in literature and writing. I am highly trained in grammar and mechanics. I have extensive experience in writing and editing papers. I am also skilled at reading and interpreting literature. I have read a wide array of books and I have written and edited many papers. Genres of literature I have studied at the collegiate level include British literature (spanning from Old English to modern day), American literature, world literature and several less traditional topics such as children's literature and science fiction. I also took numerous courses in creative fiction and non-fiction writing. I am highly qualified for tutoring and teaching English. In addition to tutoring general English skills such as reading and writing for students from Kindergarten to college and beyond, I am also offer test prep coaching. I am great at helping students improve their reading comprehension, which is a crucial skill for the reading portions of both the ACT and SAT. I also have an excellent understanding of grammar and vocabulary to help students prepare for the ACT English test and the SAT Writing and Language test. I can help students improve their writing skills and tailor them to meet the criteria for the essay portion. I know a number of test taking strategies as well that will improve performance as well as confidence about the test. I am also well-acquainted with Advanced Placement exams, particularly in my specialties of literature and English language. I am also available for help with International Baccalaureate classes, as I am an IB Diploma recipient myself and understand the rigors and intricacies of the program. I can assist students with their English requirements, including preparing for the oral assessment and the various exam papers.
